Synopsis. In 1868, rumors of a sea monster attacking ships in the Pacific Ocean have created apprehension and fear among sailors, disrupting shipping lanes. The U.S. government invites Professor Pierre M. Aronnax (Paul Lukas) and his assistant, Conseil (Peter Lorre), to join an expedition to prove or disprove the monster's existence. When the sailor dies, he is buried in a coral forest on the ocean floor. By that time, the survivors discover that Nemo has a tremendous fortune in gold salvaged from sunken vessels.
It is perhaps the most popular book of his science-fiction series Voyages extraordinaires (1863–1910).
